All started by saying hell yeah!

Over the years I’ve had a lot of crazy adventures. One winter I met a Kiwi guy in a car park in Morocco who parked his van next to mine. I had my toolbox with me and ended up helping him fix bits on his van. He said, “I’ve got a rusty old sailboat in Papua New Guinea, wanna sail round Indo?” So I said yeah!

Surf spots and stunning anchorages

I flew to Oz, where we fixed up the boat after it’d been sitting rotting in a crocky creek. We got the bare minimum sorted, then set sail. No real plan or direction, just chasing waves and figuring things out en route. From start to finish it was a mad adventure, and a real chance to connect with different people and cultures across Indo.

Hidden gems and a rusty old boat

I’m not a big fan of surf culture, and all the consumer crap that goes with it. I just love surfing, especially in remote spots with no-one around. We just sailed around cross referencing chart to chase the best waves. There’s a real freedom in be responsible for you own and other safety, you fully own both the good and bad shit. And there was plenty of both!

Moroccan waves that feel like home

I’ve spend a lot of winters living in Morocco, down in Taghazout. Freelancing gave me the freedom to live this kind of dual life. With time and energy to be a part of the local community and to really get to know that stretch of coastline. Out of everywhere in the world, these are the waves I know the most intimately.

Riads, projects and parties

Over the years, I’ve made many good friends there, helping with hostels, riads, projects, and parties along the way. I really appreciated being welcomed into the culture and feeling at home. What I value most are experiences, and the luxury of time to understand other people’s everyday lives, especially through sharing food, traditions, and those funny moments that connect us all.
